A LETTER FROM DICK AND THE TEAM
Dear Fans,
What an unusual start to the Supercars season we have had. Itstarted brilliantly with a win on the streets of Adelaide, and our team takingthe Championship lead. As they always do, our team and drivers made usextremely proud.
We then faced an unprecedented situation in Melbourne lastweek. Now things are different. We face a period of uncertainty, and we mustadapt and change our behaviours as we navigate this challenging time together.
As has been reported extensively in the media, guidelinesset by the Australian Government have banned mass gatherings of more than 500people to help limit the risk of COVID-19 (coronavirus) spreading.
Today, Supercars have announced the postponement of the nextthree events of the 2020 season, meaning that the Tasmania, Auckland and Perthevents will not happen on their allocated dates.
Please see Supercars statement regarding this below:
SUPERCARS: Statement from CEO Sean Seamer, 18th March 2020
Today, on behalf of the VirginAustralia Supercars Championship, I want to provide an update on our plan formanaging the 2020 Championship during the months ahead.
We have been working diligently to assess all available options to ensurecontinuity of the Series.
Obviously, the situation is evolving, but we acknowledge the need to actdecisively with the information we have at hand.
Our sport is a visceral experience and rather than run without crowds, we havedecided, along with our key broadcast and government partners, to delay anyfurther racing until June.
Tasmania, Auckland and Perth events will all be postponed until later in theyear, not cancelled.
Fortunately, our calendar this year enables us to do this.
Supercars’ priority is to deliver the 14 round 2020 championship for our fansand partners, irrespective of the dates. Bathurst will obviously proceed on itsscheduled date. We have a plan for how we can make that happen and will begindiscussions with all of our stakeholders over the coming days to lock this in.
We anticipate that we will be able to formalise and communicate this planwithin the next few weeks. In the meantime, we are unique andfortunate in that we are able to simulate our racing via eSports.
So, between now and late June, Supercars will host, via Twitch, Fox Sports andKayo, an eSeries Championship where fans will get to see our stars battle itout in a virtual world while we wait to go racing again for real.
Our new annual behind the scenes Docuseries, The Inside Line- A Season with Erebus Motorsport, will ensure that, in conjunction with our eSeries, Supercars and its stars stayin our fans’ living rooms over the coming days and weeks. Eight episodes ofthis series will be available from March 30th on Foxtel, Fox Sports and Kayo.
We wish our fans, partners and people all the best through these challengingtimes.
ENDS
The situation with which we are faced is changing all thetime and as a team we have spent lots of time and energy preparing for whatlies ahead.
We continue to review these measures each day, and have beenmaking plans for this scenario that has come to fruition.
We have taken direction and advice from Supercarsmanagement, government and health experts and we look forward to being able toreturn to doing what we love soon.
As we take this break, we wish nothing but good health forall of our members, Supercars fans and the wider Australian community. Pleaselisten to the authorities, and do everything they ask as we try to slow thespread of this virus.
We are proud of the way our fans have responded on the manysocial media platforms in recent days, and we appreciate your patience andsupport while we work through this extraordinary situation.
